DOCUMENT PHENOTYPES USING THE MAIZEGDB PHENOTYPIC CONTROLLED VOCABULARY

It is very important to use the vocabulary MaizeGDB holds for phenotyping to ensure that phenotype data collected in the field can be imported into MaizeGDB as easily as possible. For this reason, MaizeGDB now REQUIRES that you utlize the MaizeGDB Phenotypic Controlled Vocabulary if you plan to deposit your data at MaizeGDB. At present, the terms are available in a simple format by downloading this file (Excel spreadsheet), or you can download the PC or Macintosh formatted zipped Excel spreadsheet, which includes ancillary information including a MaizeGDB link to access the phenotype record.

In addition, a "MaizeGDB Standalone Phenotype Browser" (MaizeGDB SPB) is under development. Phase 1 of the MaizeGDB SPB will have a free desktop interface database that will have the ability to allow the users to browse, flag, and recall phenotypes and mutants of interest. Maize Community Beta testing will begin fall '08. Revisions will be implemented and public release available spring '09. Phase 2 will involve adding functionality between the MaizeGDB SPB and field data managers (hand-held devices).
