Husk - one of 8-14 modified leaves that surround the developing 'ear'. Each husk comprises mostly of a sheathing base. The leaf blade (lamina) and ligule of each husk are often still recognizable, although these components are usually very much reduced in size or even absent. Each husk has a single central keel (mid-rib) and a single apex, unlike the prophyll which is two-keeled and terminates in two apices. |
